The good news is that the mind always comes up with the next thing, the next goal, sooner or later. It is in our nature. Purpose demands action at its core. It demands a kind of devotion.
But understand that most action is the result of some restlessness — sometimes a restlessness of the soul, an overarching feeling that we are lacking or deficient in some way. We breathe only because the mind and body tell us we need air. The act of breathing is a direct response to a deficiency.
When we do not act, it is usually because we have either found a kind of peace where we are, or because the cost of action does not outweigh the value of inaction. And that can be a genuine state of peace, if you allow it to be, as long as you recognize why you are not acting on some desire. That peace can last a moment, a day, or years, until the need arises once again.
If purpose is the result of taking on responsibility, then know there will never be an end to the things in life that require tending to, be it a person, a place, or a thing.
So if the next goal does not surface right away, enjoy your life. If the next goal does appear, act on it — but more importantly, enjoy your life. There is a discipline to being mindful, to staying in the present, and to not creating problems before they exist. Something I had to learn myself.
When you reach that next crossroads, you will figure out what to do. The path will reveal itself, but only at that time, and only for that future self. The question now is this: what gift can the person you are in this moment give to your future self, so that when the time comes, no matter what, your future self will know peace?
